Bread Pudding

Bread pudding is typically served as a dessert, however, savory bread puddings are delicious too and often served as a side dish or main course.

Bread pudding is one of my favorite desserts! It's a good thing bread pudding is so easy to make and the flavor combinations are endless!

Because of the relatively long cook time, my Apple Pie Bread Pudding fills the air with the aroma of sweet cinnamon and warm apples that lingers long after the baking timer goes off.

Once cooled ever so slightly, this delicious dessert is ready to serve! You'll want to savor every bite of this warm apple dessert dripping in sweet maple cream sauce.

Dessert or Breakfast?

I honestly don't know if there is a better dessert than comforting bread pudding.

Delicious Bread pudding is so easy to make, similar to baked french toast, and the flavor combinations are endless, but my favorite is this Apple Pie Bread Pudding with Maple Cream Sauce.

Although, I mostly serve traditional bread pudding for dessert, this Apple Pie Bread Pudding recipe would make an impressive breakfast casserole too. I especially love that homemade bread pudding can be prepped ahead of time and baked shortly before serving!

Apple Bread Pudding Recipe Ingredients

  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Unsalted butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Kosher salt
  • Apples, peeled and sliced - I love the addition of apples in this bread pudding recipe. I used SweeTango apples, but if you can't find SweetTango, good substitutions would be Honeycrisp, Envy, or Gala. If you want a tangier flavor, Granny Smith Apples are a great choice.

Apple Pie Bread Pudding with Maple Cream Sauce is an easy dessert bursting with flavor from warm apples, sweet cinnamon, and the irresistible maple cream sauce.

Ingredients

Apple Pie Bread Pudding
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs, large
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 10 regular sized hamburger buns and/or hot dog buns cut into bread cubes (see notes)
Maple Cream Sauce
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple extract (see notes)
  • small pinch of salt

Instructions

Apple Pie Bread Pudding
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and spray a 9x11" baking dish with baking spray or butter lightly.
  2. In large bowl combine 2 cups milk, 1 1/2 cups sugar, and 3 eggs. Whisk until smooth. Add 1 stick of melted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt. Mix to combine.
  3. Add half the bread cubes to egg mixture and press down so all bread cubes are submerged. Add other half of bread cubes, pressing down lightly to moisten.
  4. Spoon half of the moistened bread cubes into greased baking dish and top with half of the apple slices. Repeat layering with the remaining bread cubes and apples.
  5. Bake in preheated oven for about an hour until the bread pudding is nicely browned and slightly crispy on top. (See notes)
Maple Cream Sauce
  1. Make the maple cream sauce while the bread pudding is cooking.
  2. Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 stick butter, 1 cup heavy cream, 1/2 teaspoon maple extract, and a small pinch of salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to boil then reduce the heat to medium and allow the sauce to boil gently for about 5-10 minutes until reduced slightly.
  3. Give it a taste and adjust the maple flavor to your liking. Add more salt little by little as needed.

Notes

Hamburger buns - you may substitute your favorite bread in this recipe. I like the texture the buns give to the bread pudding, and I also like using up old hamburger and/or hot dog buns.

Testing for doneness - When you press lightly in the middle of the bread pudding it should bounce back. You don't want it too jiggly or wet in the center, so cook it longer as needed. Mine typically takes a good hour to be cooked the way we like it.

Maple extract - if you can't find maple extract you may substitute pure maple syrup. You will use more maple syrup. I suggest starting with a full teaspoon of maple syrup. Add more little by little until the sauce taste is to your liking.
